The medieval Cathedral in the center of Stavanger marks the starting point of the town's long history. King Sigurd Jorsalfar the Crusader made Stavanger a Cathedral City in 1125. Legends tell us that Bishop Reinald from Winchester built Stavanger Cathedral to wed the king for the third time. The Cathedral was originally built in the Anglo-Norman style, most likely with the aid of English craftsmen. The patron saint is St Svithun, whose arm is said to be among the original relics. The Cathedral was damaged by fire in 1272. Around the year 1300, a completely new chancel was built in the Gothic style. Of all the Norwegian Cathedrals built of stone in the Middle Ages, Stavanger cathedral is the only one that has retained its original style. Opening hours: Mon-Tue 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, Wed-Sat 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. Morning service every Sun at 11:00 am. Matins in the Bishop's Chapel Wed at 8:00 am.
