The 170 km long Hardanger Fjord is the second longest of the Norwegian fjords. The fjord divides in about 20 smaller fjords and changes names all the time. Sørfjorden and Eidfjorden are the best-known parts of the fjord. The sceneries around the Hardanger Fjord change between fjord and mountains, dramatic waterfalls and glaciers, romantic fruit gardens and green fields. Many painters, writers and composers have found their inspiration in this marvellous scenery. The Hardangervidda is Europe's largest mountain plateau and with its marked trails and lodges it is an eldorado for hikers. The most popular waterfalls of Norway are Vøringfossen, Låtefossen and Steinsdalsfossen. The culture and the traditions are strong in Hardanger. Hardanger Folk Museum in Utne focuses on the past and the present. Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter in Norheimsund is a living treeboat museum wharf. A fjord cruise is an unforgettable experience.
Getting there: From Bergen take the highway Rv7, 70 km to Norheimsund. From Oslo take the highway Rv7, 333 km to Eidfjord. |
