The Old Town (Gamlebyen) in Fredrikstad was originally constructed in 1663 as a military enclave which could be easily defended against Swedish belligerence. The narrow cobbled streets are lined with picturesque 17th century buildings. Many artists and craftsmen have established their working studios and galleries in Gamlebyen. A museum in the Gamle Slaveri outlines the history of the Old Town. It is by far the best preserved fortress town in Scandinavia.
Getting there: About 100 km (1,5 hrs) by train or bus from Oslo. A couple of minutes to walk to the river, where a ferry shuttles over to the Old Town from the jetty. |
