Tønsberg, mentioned already in the Saga of Harald Hårfagre, claims to be the oldest town in Norway, and celebrated its 1100-year anniversary in 1971. The town's role in the history has been variable. By the 17th century the town had developed into a major shipping and commercial center. In the mid-19th century Tønsberg became the center of operations for the whaling industry. The modern Tønsberg's historical attractions are not as exciting as one might expect. You can visit the ruins of the 13th century fortress Castrum Tunsbergis on the mount Slottsfjellet and climb to the Slottsfjell tower, built in 1888. Vestfold Fylkesmuseum (County Folk Museum) is also worth a visit.
Getting there: From the Oslo region, drive E18 south to Tønsberg, 98 km. |
