Kronborg is one of the most famous castles in the world thanks to Shakespeare making it the location for Hamlet. Located strategically at the narrowest point on the sound between Denmark and Sweden, the first castle was built here around 1420 to exact a toll for all ships heading into the Baltic. Due to fires, the castle was rebuilt in the 1600s in the Dutch Renaissance style. You can walk around the castle free of charge, looking for the ghost of Hamlet's father on the ramparts or say your "To be, or not to be" in the courtyard. However, there is a charge to go inside the Castle to see the royal living quarters, the dungeons, or the Great Hall. The Danish Maritime Museum is also inside the castle. |
